What is Black Fungus Disease?
Mucormycosis, an infection of sinuses, brain, lungs or other areas informally known as black fungus but during this pandemic situation, black fungus is an infection of the nose resulting from COVID-19.
Reported Cases of Black Fungus:
More than 10,000 cases of black fungus have been reported so far which affects the nose, face, orbits of the eyes, brain and lungs.
Misuse of Steroids-A Cause of This Disease:
AIIMS director Dr Randeep Guleria has attributed misuse of steroids is the cause behind the increase in black fungus cases within the country. Covid-19 patients, diabetics, and patients undergoing steroid treatment for extended durations are at a better risk of contracting it.
Black Fungus, an Epidemic in India:
Black fungus was recently announced as an epidemic by the Centre and 29 states in India under the Epidemic Diseases Act 1897.
Black Fungus Symptoms:

- Breathlessness.
Common Origin of Black Fungus and White Fungus Diseases:
Both black and white fungus are caused by mucormycetes — which is present within the environment but as they impact lungs and other vital organs they will be extremely dangerous.
Reported Cases of White Fungus in Patna:
Few days ago, four cases of white fungus were reported in Patna, Bihar. White fungus is additionally more dangerous than black fungus and cause serious problems if left untreated.
Yellow Fungus Diseases-The Most Dangerous One:
Yellow fungus is also a fungi related infection, but it is more fatal and deadly because it begins internally — unlike the others where symptoms are visible. ANI quoted Dr Tyagi as saying that this yellow fungus trait often results in a delay in its diagnosis. This characteristic of yellow fungus makes it very difficult to manage and more dangerous as early diagnosis may be a necessity in such cases.
Yellow Fungus Symptoms:
- Loss of appetite,
- Lethargy and weight loss,
- Sunken eyes due to malnutrition and organ failure,
- Slow healing of wounds and oozing of pus from the wounds,
- Necrosis (cell injury that leads to death of cells and living tissues).
Rising of Yellow Fungus Cases:
According to experts, Yellow Fungus is more dangerous than both Black Fungus and White Fungus. Amid the rising cases of Black Fungus infection in several states of India, a case of deadly Yellow Fungus infection has been reported from Ghaziabad in Uttar Pradesh .
Yellow Fungus Precautions:
- Keep your room, home and surroundings as clean as possible;
- Remove stale food and faecal matter immediately to see bacteria and fungal growth;
- Keep the humidity of the space and residential under check as excessive humidity promotes bacteria growth. Just like for Covid patients maintaining clean air flow inside the space and houses is important;
- Coronavirus positive patients must immediately start treatment so complications like yellow fungus don't develop.
