Thyroid Day Observed Globally:

World Thyroid Day is observed globally on 25 May per annum. The main purpose of the WTD is to aware of the importance of the Thyroid and the prevention and treatment of thyroid diseases.

Establishment of Thyroid Day:

This day is established in 2008 as a part of the campaign led by the European Thyroid Association (ETA) and the American Thyroid Association (ATA) followed by the Latin American Thyroid Society (LATS) and Asia Oceania Thyroid Association (AOTA) to commemorate the patients with Thyroid diseases and doctors and physicians who treat them.

The Theme of World Thyroid Day 2021:

“Mother-Baby-Iodine: The Importance of Iodine on the Woman and her Baby”, is the theme of this year's Thyroid Awareness Week. It aims to raise awareness of Iodine Deficiency Disorders in women during pregnancy.

What is Thyroid?

The thyroid is a butterfly-shaped gland within the throat that produces T3 (Thyroxine) and T4 (Triiodothyronine) and is maintained by the Thyroid-stimulating hormone(TSH). It regulates the metabolism of the body and abnormalities within this gland may cause dysfunctioning body systems.

Hypothyroidism vs Hyperthyroidism:

The decrease in hormones causes hypothyroidism (sudden weight gain) and therefore the increase in hormones causes hyperthyroidism.

Early Warning Signs of Thyroid Problems?

Some of the early warning signs of thyroid problems are:

  • High Heart Rate;
  • Excessive Tiredness;
  • Anxiety;
  • Weight Gain or Loss;
  • Body Shakes;
  • Feeling Chilly or Overheated;

  • Hair Loss.

Maintaining proper iodine levels within the diet and limiting the usage of raw goitrogenic vegetables will help in avoiding thyroid diseases.
